Grechaninov has such an often unexpected musical directionality. There are plenty of composers that never get out of the obvious rut (and maybe that's enjoyable or not) and there are others that change mood so willy-nilly in completely unmotivated ways (and maybe that's enjoyable or not). I so often find Grechaninov in a happy medium between those two extremes. He goes places I didn't expect, and yet they make a kind of marvelous sense. Or he stays in the lanes, but they're just not the lanes I'm already used to. This is an excellent example of the latter. It's over before it starts somehow, but still feels complete, even with that completely ambiguous unresolved last 3 notes. I always especially value the composers (and writers, and artists) who teach me something when I encounter their work. Grechaninov is one of those. Thanks for this.

Beautiful vignettes, sweet, and memorable❣️ As a ballet pianist for many years…these melodies are often very familiar, even in the repertoire❣️ i searched lots of “ out of print” music thats where i would find much of the beautiful music I used. One composer, whose one page miniatures, and i loved them all……was ALEXANDER MALOOF. I HAVE A COLLECTION OF HIS. AND EACH IS A MASTERPIECE. I have retired from playing professionally…and if you wanted to see his music, i would send them to you. Just message me.
